Poems for the Twenty-First Century ~~~~Selected by Diane Frank A poem is a parallel universe that creates an experience line by line. The universe unfolds in a series of images which change the inner experience of the reader. If the poem goes deep enough, the writer and the reader will be changed in a significant way by the end of the poem. River of Earth and Sky: Poems for the 21st Century mixes the poetry mahatmas of our generation with the grass roots. In these pages, you will find poets who have won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, along with lesser known poets who also deserve to be read. ~~~~ “Congratulations on this fantastic coming together of voices.” -Jane Hirshfield, author of The Lives of the Heart, The Beauty, and Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry ~~~~ “Anywhere I turn to read, masterly and compelling work.” -Robert Scotellaro, author of Measuring the Distance and Rhapsody of Fallen Objects ~~~~ “Kudos to you for putting together such an impressive collection! Top-notch poetry
By Rustin Larson
Congratulations to Diane Frank who as of today (10/20/15) is the editor of one of the top-selling poetry books on Amazon: River of Earth and Sky: Poems for the Twenty-First Century. The next time I teach poetry, this will be the textbook. What better selection for aspiring poets? There is a generous line-up of big name voices (Kim Addonizio, Stephen Dunn, Jane Hirshfield, Dorianne Laux and more), and there is an amazing stable of lesser-known poets who are writing A-list work. I have not read it all yet, but I also have not been disappointed as I swim in and out of its pages. There is so much there. That is what I like, and that is what is going to make this anthology a beautiful source of discovery for the student and the enthusiastic reader.

–Rustin Larson, author of The Philosopher Savant (Glass Lyre Press) and Bum Cantos, Winter Jazz, & The Collected Discography of Morning (Blue Light Press).

are here alongside our published and much-loved favorite authors of American poetry
By Lynne Barnes
Kim Addonizio, Willa Cather, Thomas Centolella, Stephen Dunn, Jane Hirshfield, Dorianne Laux… these are some of the famous poets you will recognize in this collection. But poet and novelist Diane Frank, editor of this book, has drawn upon her wise poetic sensibilities to bring new voices to light as well. These “new” voices, of those who may have been crafting poems after work and on weekends for decades, are here alongside our published and much-loved favorite authors of American poetry. This is a collection in the egalitarian spirit of Walt Whitman. These are delightful and accessible poems from all across the spectrum. And Melanie Gendron’s cover art and illustrations make it sparkle even more!
